A Touch of Darkness
Hello again!
Since this is a blog about books, I thought I should go ahead and actually start talking about them! So since ‘A Touch of Darkness’ is the book that got be back into reading, and started getting me into the spicier books, I decided that this first official post would be about that particular title.
Brief overview really quick; This book is a mixture of modern themes and Greek mythology. It follows the story of Hades and Persephone, and is told from her point of view. But unlike the actual story that we are told in history class, Hades does not just up and grab her, then whisk her away to the Underworld forever. In this retelling they strike a bargain that is very vague in the rules.
Reasons I enjoyed this book was that fact that I absolutely loved Greek mythology growing up, especially this story. Granted you know when I had first heard they story in elementary school, certain darker parts of the story where left out. So when I was walking through the book section at Target one day, I saw it sitting on an EndCap under a sign that said “BookTok”. I was barely half way through the book when I went back to buy the next two in the series.
In my opinion this book gives off more the forbidden romance type of vibes, because with her overbearing mother I can understand why. Definitely made me feel like I was living within my small home town with the way Persephone was talking about her mother having nymphs spy on her and report back with what she was doing. But I was confused as to why Demeter was like that considering Persephone was hiding that she was a god, or Divine as they are referred to in this series.
When I started these books, I initially did not know that theres was another series that showed Hades point of view on this same time line, but that will be discussed in a different post. But there are certain times throughout this first book that are just odd to me because you just sit and ask yourself “how did he know”, or “why was he there”, a couple of the many questions that I had to ask myself about his behaviors and actions.
The spice level to this book is not a high as other books in the series. On a scale of 1 to 5 chili peppers, I would say its about 2 chili peppers. Not too bad, kind of had the slow burn tension building for the first 2/3rds of the story.
If there are any questions you have, or any comments, just let me know! I’m not exactly sure how long to make these posts so I will take constructive feedback if you want them to be longer or shorter, if you felt there were spoilers or if I was too vague. Constructive criticism is all that will be accepted.
See ya on the next page!
